Airport Surface Mine

Project Overview
Terra Tech Engineering played a crucial role in the planning and permitting of a 400-acre remining project to support the expansion of the former Grundy Municipal Airport. This initiative aimed to extract approximately 1.5 million tons of metallurgical coal while regrading 30 million cubic yards of rock to accommodate a 5,100-foot runway and over 100 acres of commercial development property.
A comprehensive mine plan was successfully developed, and the project secured key state and federal permits from Virginia Energy (MLR), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). As the project nears the end of the reclamation phase, our team continues to provide permitting and mitigation support, including early site bond release and stream and wetland mitigation. These efforts will transition the site into a new regional airport and commercial development hub.
